A Library, a Speakeasy, and the Most "Them" Engagement Session We've Ever Shot | Anoka, MN

Fox Tale Photo | Minneapolis Engagement Photographer

Lobby in Anoka , Mn

When Kenzie and Shawn's friends saw the sneak peek from their engagement session, their reaction was simple: "That is so you guys."

That's the goal. That's always the goal.

At Fox Tale Photo, we believe your engagement session shouldn't feel like a photoshoot. It should feel like a really great date night that we happened to tag along on. And for Kenzie and Shawn, that meant two locations in Anoka that told the story of exactly who they are together: the Rum River Library and Nucky's Speakeasy.

Why Location Matters More Than You Think

One of the most common questions we get from couples planning their engagement session in the Minneapolis area is: "Where should we go?"

The honest answer? Wherever you actually love to be.

Scenic parks are beautiful and we love shooting them, but there's something different that happens when a couple is photographed somewhere that genuinely means something to them. Their body language changes. They stop performing for the camera and start just being together. The photos feel less like portraits and more like memories.

That's the philosophy behind every engagement session we plan at Fox Tale Photo. And it's exactly what made Kenzie and Shawn's session so special.

Chapter One: The Rum River Library

We started the afternoon at the Rum River Library in Anoka, MN, and if you haven't been, it's worth a visit for the architecture alone.

Kenzie and Shawn are the kind of couple who go on book dates. They browse shelves together, argue about covers, and lose track of time in quiet corners. So shooting here wasn't just a fun idea, it was genuinely them. The library's staff were incredibly accommodating, helping us find a quieter time to come in so we could work in a low-traffic area of the building. No flash, no disruption to anyone studying or browsing, and no patrons in any of the shots. Just four people who could not stop laughing, doing their best to keep it together in a library.

While Sierra was busy guiding Kenzie and Shawn through prompts and getting them comfortable in the space, Nate was working the technical side: reading the available light, finding compositions, and figuring out how to make those fluorescent-lit library stacks look as warm and inviting as they felt. It's a true team effort, and honestly it's one of our favorite parts of shooting together.

The standout feature of the space is a stunning stained glass window with real historical significance. It was actually transported to the library from another location, and it made for a gorgeous natural backdrop that no studio could replicate.

We leaned hard into the "bookstore aesthetic" throughout this portion of the shoot: framing shots through the stacks, capturing quiet moments with their favorite titles, and a genuinely hilarious shot of one of them reading upside down while the other looked on in exasperated amusement.

The lighting here was a mix of indoor fluorescent and soft window light. Not the most glamorous combination, but a puzzle we love to solve. The key is working with the warmth of the space rather than fighting it, and letting the coziness of the environment do some of the heavy lifting.

Chapter Two: Nucky's Speakeasy

After wrapping up at the library, we made the short drive over to Nucky's Speakeasy at 300 E Main St, Anoka, MN, and if you've never been, you need to fix that immediately.

The entry alone sets the tone: a red door, a riddle to solve before you get in, and the feeling that you've stepped into 1920s Minneapolis. The historic building features a breathtaking lobby with chandeliers, a grand staircase, exposed brick, and some of the warmest, moodiest lighting we've ever had the pleasure of shooting in. The owner was incredibly welcoming and generous with us. Nucky's Speakeasy is the kind of place that genuinely loves being a part of people's stories.

(Side note: their brisket nachos are an absolute must. We may have taken a short creative break to enjoy them. We regret nothing.)

The owner was kind enough to walk us through the space beforehand, point out the best spots, and give us full permission to work the way we needed to. That kind of coordination makes all the difference, and it meant we could focus on the creative side knowing we weren't stepping on anyone's experience. Sierra kept the energy moving between setups, keeping Kenzie and Shawn loose and laughing while Nate experimented with a few different approaches to capture the full range of what this space has to offer:

  • Direct flash for a high-contrast, paparazzi-inspired editorial look

  • Off-camera flash with a wireless transmitter to bring out the grit and texture of the interior brick walls

  • A small constant LED light for close detail shots like the rings, the craft cocktails, and the quiet moments that deserve to be seen clearly

The tonal shift between the library and the speakeasy created a natural visual arc for the gallery. Cozy and playful in the afternoon light, then cinematic and romantic as the evening settled in. It's the kind of variety that makes an engagement gallery feel like a full story rather than a single scene.

And then, completely unplanned, as we were wrapping up and heading out, the moon appeared perfectly framed above the entrance staircase with soft fog rolling in around it. We grabbed the shot. Some of our favorite frames are the ones you can't plan for.

What Made This Session Ours

Kenzie and Shawn brought everything to this session: genuine warmth, easy laughter, zero self-consciousness, and an enthusiasm for their own story that made our job feel less like work and more like a privilege.

They're getting married in the fall of 2026, and we genuinely cannot wait to be there for it.

If you're a couple planning your wedding in the Minneapolis area and you want your engagement session to feel like you, not just pretty but real, we'd love to hear your story.

Minnehaha Falls, Minnesota Engagement Session

When it comes to capturing the essence of a beautiful engagement shoot, it's all about finding the right inspiration and the perfect backdrop. Our recent engagement session at Minnehaha Falls, nestled near Minneapolis, was a picturesque journey through the heart of fall vibes, nature, and the soothing rush of water. With a dash of vintage charm and a vibrant, modern twist, we embarked on an unforgettable photography adventure with a wonderful couple.

Our vision for this shoot was to merge the allure of autumn with the serenity of the natural world. We decided to add a vintage touch, utilizing an old-school lens and experimenting with a different color palette for select shots while maintaining a modern, sharp, and vibrant look for the rest. This blend of styles allowed us to craft a truly unique narrative for this lovely couple.

Our day began in the embrace of lush green grass, with a vivid red blanket serving as a perfect prop. We wanted to capture intimate candid moments, steering clear of rigid poses. Instead, we provided a series of prompts to help the couple relax and be themselves, ensuring genuine emotions shone through each frame.

However, there was a heart-stopping moment during the shoot. As we prompted the couple to throw fall leaves into the air, there was a near-miss when the engagement ring slipped from its perch, almost lost in the leaves. Thankfully, we found it, and the slight scare added an unexpected element of thrill to our day.

With the blanket of nature as our backdrop, we made our way to the picturesque bridge that loomed above Minnehaha Falls. It was a spur-of-the-moment decision, and we didn't even have the ideal telephoto lens, but the couple's presence high above the falls, set against the autumnal backdrop, was too mesmerizing to resist. It was an impromptu decision that paid off brilliantly.

Descending to the base of the falls, we continued to capture more intimate moments. The falls, streams, and winding paths became stunning natural backdrops for the couple's love story. The setting sun added a warm, golden glow, and as it dipped below the horizon, a peaceful hush descended upon the falls. We found ourselves alone at the bottom, immersed in an intimate serenity that encapsulated the essence of this beautiful location.

Minnehaha Falls, near Minneapolis, is undoubtedly one of my favorite spots for engagement shoots. Its natural romantic ambiance is unparalleled, creating the perfect backdrop for capturing love stories. The cascading waters and the surrounding flora set the stage for enchanting moments.

One of the highlights of this shoot was the use of long exposure techniques. These techniques added an element of motion and magic to the background scenes, emphasizing the ever-flowing beauty of nature.

In the end, this engagement shoot was a breathtaking journey through nature's wonders, with Minnehaha Falls as the crown jewel of our story. It reminded me that, as a photographer, my craft is not just about capturing moments but also about co-creating cherished memories with the couples I have the privilege to work with.

Certainly, here are a few paragraphs on why couples might prefer vintage photos without numbering:

Vintage photos hold a timeless appeal that resonates with couples for a myriad of reasons. The enduring elegance of vintage photography, with its nostalgic and slightly aged aesthetic, exudes a unique charm that draws many couples in. The following paragraphs explore the various motivations behind couples' preference for vintage photos.

Vintage photos encapsulate a sense of timeless elegance that transcends fleeting trends. They transport us to an era when photography was a meticulously crafted art form, characterized by a deliberate and thoughtful approach to capturing moments. For couples seeking sophistication and class in their images, vintage photos provide a lasting, classic allure that modern photography sometimes struggles to replicate.

One of the most compelling reasons behind the popularity of vintage photos is the powerful sense of nostalgia they evoke. Even for couples who didn't personally experience the era represented in the photos, vintage images can stir a profound connection to the past. This emotional depth enriches the storytelling aspect of their love narrative, adding layers of sentiment and history.

Vintage photos have an innate ability to tell stories in a way that is both distinctive and captivating. They often resemble pages from an old, cherished book, unfolding tales of love and life. Couples who appreciate the art of storytelling may favor vintage photography to weave their unique narrative into the timeless fabric of the past.

The aesthetic variety offered by vintage photos is another compelling reason. Sepia, black and white, faded color—these diverse styles allow couples to select the vintage aesthetic that best reflects their personal style and event theme. This ensures their photos become as unique as their love story itself.

Furthermore, vintage photos are widely regarded as artistic masterpieces. Their gentle imperfections and creative compositions can transform everyday moments into extraordinary works of art. For couples with a strong artistic inclination, vintage photography offers a distinctive visual appeal that complements their love story's artistic essence.

In a world characterized by instant gratification and technological precision in photography, the allure of vintage photos lies in their ability to slow down time and capture love in its most romantic and timeless form. They allow couples to craft heirlooms that will be cherished across generations, infusing a sense of history and depth into their love story. Vintage photography transcends mere style; it's a testament to the enduring beauty of love.

Fall is undeniably a perfect time to get engaged for a multitude of reasons. The season's enchanting atmosphere, characterized by the changing colors of leaves, cool, crisp air, and a touch of romantic coziness, sets the stage for memorable proposals. Fall's warm and earthy color palette, with hues of deep reds, warm oranges, and rich browns, provides a naturally captivating backdrop for engagement moments. The pleasant weather allows for outdoor proposals, whether it's in a picturesque park, beneath a canopy of trees, or even at a pumpkin patch. As the season ushers in a sense of transformation and new beginnings, it symbolically mirrors the essence of engagement – a fresh, vibrant chapter in a couple's love story. Fall's inherent charm, along with its association with love, warmth, and togetherness, makes it an ideal time for couples to embark on their journey towards marriage, creating memories that are as beautiful and enduring as the season itself.
